Hannah Heads to Ghana

Hannah heads to Ghana to find out more about Fairtrade links

A former Chesham High pupil is heading to Ghana for four months to build on the Fairtrade partnership between the town and Brenu School near Cape Coast. Hannah Tricks, aged 18, plans to teach at the primary school thanks to the Sabre Charitable Trust, which is a partnership set up between the two schools. As well as gaining experience of working with children, she also hopes to see firsthand the difference that the Fairtrade movement is making to Ghana's farmers and their families, particularly as Ghana is the source of cocoa for Divine Chocolate.

When she returns, Hannah intends to spread the message to Chesham shoppers about the advantages of buying products from producers who are Fairtrade accredited. Hannah has long been a supporter of Fairtrade and was part of Chesham High School's Fairtrade movement, becoming the representative on Chesham's Fairtrade council in year 13.

She also insists that her family use Fairtrade products whenever possible, and recently she won a hamper from Oxfam for creating a meal using nothing but Fairtrade products. Hannah said: "I am very grateful for the support I have received from the Fairtrade council, not only in help arranging the visit to the fair trade farmer, but for the whole trip, and I hope to provide regular updates throughout my trip for them."

Rev Colin Cartwright, Chairman of Chesham FT Group says: "Hannah was a great help when she was Fairtrade representative for Chesham High School on the local Fairtrade Group. She was clearly passionate about helping people in developing countries and encouraging people to buy Fairtrade. Hannah is hoping to visit Fairtrade farms while she is out in Ghana and we look forward to hearing more, both during her visit and when she returns to Chesham in April."
