We are thrilled by the success of our Fairtrade Fortnight 2016 events - thank-you to everyone who came out to support Fairtrade! On Thursday 3rd March, a free talk was given by local expert Colin Smith of Smith's Coffee Company. Colin gave a fascinating presentation about how coffee is grown and transformed into the popular drink that so many of us love. Using his knowledge travelling to many coffee-producing countries, he showed examples of how the additional money provided to farming communities by Fairtrade was used to provide healthcare, education and agricultural training in developing world countries. Resident and local coffee shop owners enjoyed sampling different types of Fairtrade coffee and bags of Smith's Fairtrade coffee were on sale, with all profits going to the Hospice of St. Francis.
The Fairtrade Breakfast Team - by Chris ShortOn Saturday 5th March, the Town Hall hosted Chesham's Big Fairtrade Breakfast. Despite a snow flurry first thing, a queue of people soon formed for breakfast, tempted in by the smell of coffee and bacon! Many people were surprised by the range of Fairtrade breakfast goods available, including preserves, mueslis and fruits juice. Even more Fairtrade goods, from laundry liquid to Easter eggs, were on sale thanks to a Traidcraft stall. The Rt. Hon. Cheryl Gillan MP and Cllr Mimi Harker OBE, the Chairman of Chiltern District Council, popped by for breakfast and to then their support to Chesham's Fairtrade Town status.

Gill Walker, newly appointed Chesham4Fairtrade Chairwoman said, "The Chesham4Fairtrade team is delighted with the level of support we've received for these events. We've shown that Fairtrade makes a real difference to the lives of some of the poorest farmers and workers around the world. Now people can see what a huge range of Fairtrade goods are available at reasonable prices, we hope even more people in Chesham will make the easy switch to buying more Fairtrade."
